Presidential office says was aware of N.K. leader's planned trip to China in advance

By Chae Yun-hwan

SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Yonhap) -- The presidential office said Thursday it had been aware of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's plan to visit China next week before Pyongyang's official announcement.

Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik made the remarks, hours after the North announced that Kim will attend China's ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II on Sept. 3 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"The government was aware of this in advance," Kang told reporters, noting that this week's summit between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump were influenced by such developments.
