UNC says around 30 N. Korean troops crossed inter-Korean border recently, triggering S. Korean warning shots

SEOUL -- Around 30 North Korean troops recently crossed the inter-Korean border despite warning broadcasts, triggering warning shots from the South Korean military, a spokesperson of the U.S.-led U.N. Command (UNC) said Sunday, citing its investigation into the incident.

The spokesperson made the remarks in response to a question from Yonhap News Agency, a day after North Korea berated the South Korean military for having fired more than 10 warning shots at North Korean troops who were conducting a border reinforcement project last week.

Lee says to raise full range of issues on N. Korea in key summit with Trump

WASHINGTON -- President Lee Jae Myung said Sunday he will raise a full range of issues on North Korea in his high-stakes summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing the need to engage in dialogue with Pyongyang at a time when the North has rebuffed Lee's peace overture.

Lee made the remarks aboard his flight from Tokyo to Washington for his first summit talks with Trump at the White House on Monday, after he recently unveiled a three-stage denuclearization plan for North Korea, which aims to persuade Pyongyang to freeze, reduce and eventually dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

Trump says he will meet N. Korean leader Kim Jong-un 'someday'

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his willingness to resume dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying he will meet the reclusive leader "someday."

Trump made the remarks during a press availability, touting his "very good" relationship with Kim, as he is set to have a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House, where the leaders are expected to discuss joint efforts to bring Pyongyang back to the negotiating table, among other things.

Presidential office says was aware of N.K. leader's planned trip to China in advance

SEOUL -- The presidential office said Thursday it had been aware of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's plan to visit China next week before Pyongyang's official announcement.

Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik made the remarks, hours after the North announced that Kim will attend China's ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II on Sept. 3 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

FM Cho notes 'close attention' to be paid to N.K. leader's planned China visit

SEOUL -- Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's planned attendance at the upcoming military parade in China warrants close attention, vowing continued efforts to bring Pyongyang back to dialogue.

Cho made the remark during an interview with Yonhap News TV, hours after the North announced that Kim will travel to Beijing to attend the Sept. 3 celebration marking the end of World War II, known as Victory Day in China.

SEOUL -- North Korea appears to be inactive in engaging in diplomacy with South Korea or the United States, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said Friday, days after both President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump expressed their eagerness to resume talks with Pyongyang in their high-stakes summit.

Wi made the remarks a day after Pyongyang's state media announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will soon visit China to attend a military parade next week in Beijing, setting the stage for a possible three-way summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

N. Korean economy logs fastest growth in 8 years in 2024: BOK

SEOUL -- North Korea saw its economy grow at the fastest pace in eight years in 2024, driven by improvements in the manufacturing and construction sectors and increased trade with Russia, South Korea's central bank said Friday.

The North Korean economy is estimated to have expanded 3.7 percent from a year earlier in 2024, following 3.1 percent on-year growth in 2023, according to a report from the Bank of Korea (BOK).
