Militant umbrella union threatens strike

Yang Kyung-soo (2nd from R, front), head of the militant Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), one of the country's two largest umbrella unions, announces a plan at its headquarters in Seoul on Nov. 30, 2022, to stage a strike on Dec. 6, after the KCTU leadership's emergency meeting over the government's return-to-work order on striking truckers. The union denounced the order as "unconstitutional" by incapacitating labor rights. The previous day, the government issued the compulsory directive on some 2,500 cement truckers first in consideration of the severity of the strike's impact on the country's economy. Truck drivers went on strike nationwide on Nov. 24, demanding the government extend temporary rules guaranteeing minimum freight rates, citing high fuel prices. (Yonhap)
