S. Korea to adopt int'l age counting system starting Wednesday

A notice attached to a convenience store in Seoul on June 27, 2023, informs that people aged under 19 cannot buy cigarettes or alcoholic beverages one day before South Korea scraps its traditional method of counting age and adopts the international standard that will result in the reduction of a person's age by one or two years on official documents. The unified standard will be applied in all judicial and administrative areas, but not for military conscription purposes, calculating the legal age to drink alcohol or smoke, or for school age.
