Senior diplomats of S. Korea, Japan discuss Naver-Line controversy
SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- Senior diplomats of South Korea and Japan on Monday discussed the ongoing controversy over Tokyo's apparent pressure on Naver to sell its stake in the operator of Line, the biggest messenger app in Japan, the foreign ministry said.
Deputy Foreign Minister Chung Byung-won told his Japanese counterpart, Takehiro Funakoshi, during a meeting in Seoul that there should be no unfair discriminatory treatment of South Korean companies, according to the ministry.
Chung was referring to the Japanese government's administrative guidance to LY, the operator of Line, to "review its capital relationship" with South Korean tech giant Naver in the wake of a massive leak of user information last year.
The ministry said the two sides agreed to maintain close communication between their diplomatic authorities to manage sensitive pending issues.
It also said the diplomats exchanged views on regional and global issues and agreed to work together for a successful South Korea-China-Japan summit expected to take place in Seoul on Sunday and Monday.
