Parliamentary committee passes confirmation hearing report for CIO chief
SEOUL, May 21 (Yonhap) -- A parliamentary committee adopted a confirmation report for the nominee for chief of the anti-corruption investigation body Tuesday.
The parliamentary legislation and judiciary committee passed the confirmation report on Oh Dong-woon, nominated as head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), during its plenary session.
Oh, a former Seoul High Court judge, was nominated last month to replace Kim Jin-wook, who retired in January following a three-year term.
The CIO has been investigating allegations that President Yoon Suk Yeol's office and the defense ministry inappropriately interfered in a military investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun during a search mission for victims of heavy downpours in July 2023.
During a parliamentary confirmation hearing last week, the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) reiterated its call for a special counsel probe into Chae's death, while the ruling party defended the CIO's ongoing investigation as "proceeding well" and said Oh is fit to serve as the agency's chief.
At the hearing, Oh vowed to conduct a thorough probe into Chae's case, saying even the president can "indeed be a subject of investigation."
During Tuesday's session, committee members of the DP said they decided to accept the report despite issues involving Oh in respect of Oh's commitment to the investigation.
