Wealth of lawmakers-elect 7.6 times higher than national average

SEOUL, May 21 (Yonhap) -- The average wealth of politicians elected to the National Assembly in last month's general election is 7.6 times greater than the average asset holdings of the general public, a progressive civic group said Tuesday.

The average wealth of the lawmakers-elect is estimated at 3.33 billion won (US$2.44 million) per person, according to an analysis of their real estate and stock holdings by the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ). The average wealth of the general public is 440 million won.

The CCEJ estimated the lawmakers-elect's average real estate and securities assets at 1.89 billion won and 860 million won, respectively.

Ahn Cheol-soo of the ruling People Power Party turned out to be the wealthiest among the lawmakers-elect with total assets worth 140 billion won, while Park Jeung of the main opposition Democratic Party holds the most real estate assets worth about 41 billion won.
