Police request arrest warrant for North Chungcheong governor over alleged bribery

SEOUL, March 17 (Yonhap) -- Police on Tuesday requested an arrest warrant for Kim Young-hwan, governor of the central province of North Chungcheong, on bribery charges.

The Chungbuk Provincial Police Agency, which launched a probe into Kim seven months ago, applied for the arrest warrant on charges of violating the anti-graft law, according to local legal circles.

Kim is accused of having Yoon Doo-young, president of the Chungbuk Volleyball Association, pay 20 million won (US$13,400) in interior design costs for his mountain cabin in Goesan on his behalf in August 2024.

The police suspect that the governor exerted influence in favor of a food company run by Yoon in return for the suspected proxy payment.

Kim is also suspected of receiving 11 million won in cash on two occasions from three local sports figures, including Yoon, ahead of his overseas business trips in April and June last year.

The governor has denied the allegations, saying he has never accepted any bribes and normally paid the interior expenses to the contractor.
