Independence fighter Hwang restores Korean nationality
This photo, provided by the patriots and veterans affairs ministry, shows the late Korean independence fighter Hwang Ki-whan. His nationality has been restored after 100 years as he died in New York without descendants in 1923, according to the ministry on April 7, 2023. His remains, currently buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in New York, will be returned to his homeland on April 10. Hwang, a Korean-born American soldier who served as a diplomat in Paris and London from 1919 to 1921, worked toward Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45). Hwang inspired the hit South Korean TV series "Mr. Sunshine" (2018). (Yonhap)
