Jennie sets first-week sales record for K-pop female soloist this year

SEOUL, March 14 (Yonhap) -- Jennie of K-pop girl group BLACKPINK has set a new record for first-week album sales for an album by a K-pop female soloist released this year, her agency said Friday.

Jennie's first studio album, "Ruby," sold more than 660,000 copies in its first week after being released on March 7, OA Entertainment said, citing data from Hanteo Chart, a leading local tracker of album sales.

The figure marks the highest first-week debut album sales for any album released by a K-pop female solo artist this year.

In the K-pop industry, first-week sales are considered an important measure for an artist's popularity and the size of his or her fandom.

"Ruby" debuted at No. 9 on the U.S. Apple Music Album Chart and No. 2 on the European Apple Music Album Chart upon its release.

The album's lead single, "like JENNIE," reached seventh on Spotify's Daily Top Song Global chart.
