Lee to host France's Macron for state visit in early April
By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL, March 13 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung will host French President Emmanuel Macron on April 2-3 for a state visit and hold summit talks with the French leader, Cheong Wa Dae said Friday.
It will mark Macron's first visit to South Korea since taking office in 2017 and the first by a French president in 11 years.
Lee and Macron are scheduled to hold summit talks on April 3 and sign memorandums of understanding on cooperation between the two countries, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing.
"The two leaders plan to discuss cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, space, nuclear energy, as well as science and technology, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges," Kang said.
The upcoming meeting will mark the third in-person talks between Lee and Macron, following their encounters on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada in June and the Group of 20 summit in South Africa in November.
Macron's visit comes as South Korea and France mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The two countries established formal ties in 1886, when the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation was signed between France and the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).
