No unusual movement by N. Korea's military detected over Yoon's ouster: JCS

By Lee Minji

SEOUL, April 7 (Yonhap) -- No unusual movement by the North Korean military has been detected after South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled to remove former President Yoon Suk Yeol from office over his failed martial law bid, a senior military official said Monday.

"The North Korean military is in the final stages of specialty training ... in the border area, some 1,500 troops are working on (creating) barren land and installing barbed wire," Col. Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters.

"(The military) is closely monitoring North Korea's missile launch movements," Lee said.

South Korea's military had stepped up its surveillance posture against Pyongyang's potential military provocations as the Constitutional Court delivered its verdict on Yoon's ouster last Friday.

Following the ruling, acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho presided over a meeting of key commanders and called for a robust readiness posture against the North's possible provocations.

North Korea reported on Yoon's ouster last Saturday, without making its own commentary, in a move seen as keeping a distance from the South after leader Kim Jong-un defined inter-Korean relations as those between "two states hostile to each other."

The North has since removed street lamps and installed mines along its side of inter-Korean roads, as well as deploying troops to reinforce barbed wire within its side of the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas.
