(LEAD) Fire extinguished at shuttered thermal power plant in Yeosu; no casualties reported

YEOSU, South Korea, April 7 (Yonhap) -- A fire at a shuttered thermal power plant in the southern coastal city of Yeosu was put out on Monday, with no casualties reported, according to authorities.

Flames erupted at the power plant in Yeosu, located 316 kilometers south of Seoul, at 9:28 a.m. in the midst of its demolition works, but firefighters extinguished the flames at 10:56 a.m.

Four people were working at the time of the fire, but no one was injured as they evacuated on time, according to a local office of Korea East-West Power Co., which owns the power plant.

The power plant had been closed since 2021 after over 40 years of operation.
