Lee Cook-jong named head of military hospital
Lee Cook-jong meets the press at the defense ministry in Seoul on Dec. 27, 2023, as he was named the new head of the Armed Forces Daejeon Hospital in Daejeon, 139 kilometers south of Seoul, earlier in the day. Lee is famous for successfully carrying out medical operations on Seok Hae-kyun, the skipper of the seized 11,500-ton Samho Jewelry freighter who was shot by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden in 2011, and Oh Chong-song, a North Korean soldier who suffered multiple gunshot wounds during his desperate escape to South Korea via the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom in November 2017, while serving as the head of Ajou University Hospital's emergency medical center.
