S. Korea's peacekeeping unit in Lebanon provides medical services to over 130,000 civilians
SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's United Nations peacekeeping unit in Lebanon has provided medical care to more than 130,000 local civilians since its humanitarian deployment in 2007, the South's military said Friday.
The Dongmyeong Unit reached the milestone Thursday, as its medical personnel continue to provide services to local patients as part of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) tasked with maintaining peace in southern Lebanon.
The unit's team of doctors, dentists and veterinarians routinely visit five villages twice a week to treat around 30 people a day, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
Rokaya Fakieh, the 130,000th person to receive treatment, thanked the unit, describing the medical care they provide as a "big gift," the JCS said.
The unit operates the only mobile dental clinic within UNIFIL, and its doctors offer treatment for injuries and chronic illnesses, including diabetes. Its veterinarians are focused on vaccinating animals for disease prevention.
The overseas contingent has served to monitor peace between Lebanon and Israel since its deployment, while also conducting various humanitarian activities, including reconstruction efforts.
