Moon's ex-son-in-law booked as suspect in bribery case
SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors investigating bribery allegations involving former President Moon Jae-in have additionally booked his former son-in-law as a suspect, prosecution officials said Friday.
The Jeonju District Prosecutors Office recently booked Moon's 45-year-old ex-son-in-law, surnamed Seo, without detention on charges of accepting bribes, the officials said.
The move has increased the number of suspects in the bribery case to six, including Moon and his daughter, Da-hye.
Moon and Da-hye are accused of receiving bribes in the form of salary and other payments to Seo by Thailand-based budget carrier Thai Eastar Jet.
Seo was appointed executive director at the airline in 2018 after the company's founder and former two-term lawmaker Lee Sang-jik was appointed head of the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency.
Prosecutors suspect that Lee's appointment was made in exchange for hiring Seo at the airline, particularly given Seo's lack of experience in the airline industry at the time.
Moon is alleged to have stopped providing financial support to his daughter's family after Seo's employment, and prosecutors consider the approximately 223 million won (US$151,959) in salary and other compensation paid by the airline to Seo and Da-hye as a bribe to the former president.
