Independence activist's remains to return home
This photo, provided by the patriots and veterans affairs ministry on Feb. 1, 2023, shows the late Korean independence activist Hwang Ki-hwan, whose remains, currently buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in New York, will be returned to his homeland after 100 years. Hwang, a Korean-born American soldier who served as a diplomat in Paris and London from 1919 to 1921, worked towards Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45). The remains of Hwang, who died of a heart attack in New York in 1923, is slated for return in April. Hwang inspired the hit South Korean TV series "Mr. Sunshine" (2018). (PHOTO NOT FOR SALE) (Yonhap)
