S. Korean investment projects in U.S. to be unveiled 'over coming weeks': senior U.S. official

By Song Sang-ho

WASHINGTON, April 2 (Yonhap) -- A senior official of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration said Thursday that South Korea's investment projects in the United States will be announced "over the coming weeks."

The official made the remarks during a telephonic press briefing on tariff announcements, while mentioning a Japan-funded project to construct a gas-fired power plant near Portsmouth, Ohio.

"You saw ... for instance, the first deal with Portsmouth, which was US$33 billion," he said of the Japan-financed project. "You've got Korea. Those are going to be announced over the coming weeks."

His remarks signaled progress in joint efforts by South Korea and the U.S. to select the first investment project under Seoul's commitment to investing $350 billion in the U.S.

Under last year's trade and investment deal, South Korea has made the investment commitment -- with an annual cap of $20 billion -- and other pledges in return for the Trump administration lowering its "reciprocal" tariffs on the country to 15 percent from 25 percent.

Efforts to implement Korea's investment pledge gained momentum after the National Assembly passed a special bill aimed at facilitating investments in the U.S.

A U.S. official has welcomed the passage as a "positive step" toward implementing the two countries' trade deal.
