Nat'l Assembly passes resolution for successful APEC hosting, Korean peace

SEOUL, Sept. 25 (Yonhap) -- The National Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution to provide full national support for the country's successful hosting of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, pledging to use the high-profile event to advance peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula.

The resolution passed with a rare show of cross-party unity, securing a unanimous 260-0 vote among members present.

Drafted by the National Assembly Special Committee for Supporting the 2025 APEC Summit, the measure formally "resolves to mobilize all national capabilities and provide full support, together with the government, local governments and the public, for the successful hosting of the APEC summit."

The resolution also underscores a commitment to use the international gathering to reaffirm South Korea's dedication to peace on the Korean Peninsula, promote stability in Northeast Asia and strengthen the nation's global standing.

It further highlights goals to showcase South Korea as a reliable investment destination and enhance national prestige by promoting the country as a cultural powerhouse on the global stage.

The special committee had passed the resolution earlier at its plenary meeting Monday. The committee was launched in April to support the hosting of the 32nd APEC summit, scheduled to be held in the historic tourist city of Gyeongju from Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
