SEOUL, August 1 (Yonhap) -- The 24th Seoul International Women’s Film Festival will kick off from August 25 to Septermber 1 at Megabox Sangam in Mapo district of Seoul and at Cultural Complex.
Eight days long Film Festival will be held under the slogan of “Let us meet at ().” Offline events will feature 122 movies from 33 different countries, and through online event the festival will showcase 26 films from 15 different countries.
Byun Jae-ran head of the committee stated “This year’s slogan is a refreshing invitation to participants since it has been three years since offline events were held.” adding ”I want the festival to connect pre COVID era and post COVID era and to create a path way to create vales of symbiosis and coexistence together.”
The opening film will be “The Janes” directed by Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes. The movie is about a secretive organization which worked an abortion procedure during 1960s.
Discovery is one of the competitive sections among female directors; it will feature female directors from around the world including South Korean directors for their debut feature film or up to their second feature film. Other competitive sections such as Asian Shorts, I-Teens which will feature teenage female director’s short films and more will be awarded to the directors.
Moreover, recently restored films by female directors from the world “Restored: Blind Spots in Film Archives,” “Feminist Collective” which will present the overall time line of female activism and “The moment with Yeri Han” and more segments will be offered throughout the festival. .
Segment “Polemics” with the subtitle of “Consensus on Imminent Justice.” This segment will shine the light on the most critical agenda for women each year. Through six of the films including “Feminist Riposte” by Marie Perennes and Simon Depardon and more the segment throws a question on race, diversity, refugee and more to the consensus of modern society.
The Seoul International Women’s Film Festival will award deceased actress Kang Soo-yeon with contribution plaque, and director Park Ji-wan’s commemorative film and “Come Come Come Upward” from 1989, starring Kang Soo-yeon will screened throughout the festival.
South Korean actress Bang Min-ah was appointed as the Festival Ambassador for the 24th Seoul International Women’s Film Festival. Bang Min-ah gave out an acceptance speech by stating “I feel a heavy responsibility.” adding “It is a honor to be able to address films from all over the world by enthusiastic directors.”
