SEOUL, December 28 (Yonhap) -- Yoo Dong-geun, a veteran actor of 42 years of experience who shows lingering acting skills mostly at small screens challenged himself at stage playing at a play.

He played the role of Mark Rothko, the main character of the play "Red," which was staged by the performance agency Seensee Company on the stage of the Seoul Arts Center's Small Theater on December 20. Yoo Dong-geun was double cast with Jung Bo-seok (61), who plays Mark Rothko for the third time in the play.

"Red," written by American playwright John Logan and premiered in London, England in 2009, is a two-person play which is about the real-life artist Mark Rothko, who represents abstract expressionism, and fictional character Jo Su-ken. After the performance on Broadway in 2010, he won six awards, including the Tony Award for Best Picture.

"I came to see 'Red' performed by Jung Bo-seok in 2019, and I was immersed in the charm that Mark Rothko threw into the audience. "I got the script and read it, and it was a strong motivation." (Yoo Dong-geun)

Yoo Dong-geun showed a sensitive yet bold Rothko in collaboration with Yeon Joon-seok, who plays Ken, at a demonstration for the media at the Seoul Arts Center's Small Theater on December 28.

At a press conference after the demonstration stage, he said, "The script itself is like a classical art history," adding, "It's like a big mountain for me."

Jung Bo-seok worked with Kang Seung-ho, who plays Ken, played a nervous sensitive Rothko who does not tolerate gaps.

"I am trying to approach the Rothko with no gaps, who does not tolerate and forgive any faults. When I first played for the premiere, I just acted out the character after memorizing the lines as it was too hard to understand the artistic concerns Rothko had. Now, I have more strength in my acting as I have a thought thinking, 'Rothko might have had these concerns.'"

Park Myeong-sung, CEO of Seensee company requested love and support from the audience saying, "'Red' itself has so much power, and we have been maintaining the quality until the sixth season working with skillful actors."

The play "Red" will be performed at the small theater of Seoul Arts Center until February 19.
