SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Yonhap) – Night fishing at the “2023 Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival” has been attracting visitors as the Festival marked the fifth day since its kick-off on Jan. 7.
Hwacheon-gun has been operating a night fishing program for “sancheoneo,” a species of mountain trout, every year since the 2016 Festival.
Visitors can participate in night fishing at only 15,000 won; free admission is offered to visitors who provide receipts showing that they are staying at local accommodations.
The Festival has eventually come to prompt 1,750 visitors – more than half of the 1,761 visitors over the past four days – to stay at local accommodations from Jan. 7 to 10.
Night fishing, which is held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day, is not as crowded as weekly fishing, with only an average of 200 to 300 people visiting to fish during the two hours of operation.
The Festival is also gathering visitors by holding an event of giving out gold rings to those who catch the largest fish every night.
Night fishing is evaluated to be of great help to the local economy by having the Festival also run at night and encouraging more visitors to stay at local inns.
“There is a steady increase in the number of family tourists who plans to have late dinners in the city after the weekday night fishing,” a Hwacheon-gun official said. “We will be organizing not only the night fishing program but also 3 days and 2 nights tour package for visitors to enjoy their time at the nearby Baekamsan Cable Car and Park Golf after fishing.”
