S.Korean cartoon ‘The Waiting’ nominated for Harvey Award

SEOUL, August 16 (Yonhap) -- Cartoon “The Waiting,” which recounts a story of separated family from the Korean War, was nominated for Harvey Awards’s Best International Book category,

Keum Suk Gendry-Kim’s ‘The Waiting’ was selected as one of the six nominated works for the Best International Book.

Naver Webtoon “Lore Olympus” and “Everything is Fine” were also nominated for the Digital Book of the Year.

Harvey award, named after U.S cartoonist and editor Harvey Kurtzman and implemented in 1988, is a prestigious award in U.S comics.

Final prize-winning work will be announced at New York Comicon, which will be held in Oct. 6 to Oct. 9.

“The Waiting” is based on the separated family during the Korean War and revolves around the tragedy of war. It was published in Sept. 2020.

Keum Suk Gendry-Kim is a cartoonist who has been writing stories of neglected ones in modern history, such as “Jiseul,” which dealt with Jeju 4.3 incident and “A Day with My Grandpa” about S.Korea’s atomic bomb surviours

The cartoonist won Harvey award in Best International Book category in 2020 with a cartoon “grass,” which drew the lives of former comfort women.
