SEOUL March 3 (Yonhap) -- Play “The Who & The What” by Pakistan American writer Ayad Akhtar who was awarded with the Pulitzer Prize will kick off at the National Jeongdong Theater located in Seoul starting on March 16 until 31.
The play “The Who & The What” was selected under the supporting project held by the National Jeongdong Theater was first premiered at the Hyehwadong 1 Beonji theater under the lead of director Park Hyun-ji.
The play depicts a story of a Muslim female protagonist who was born and raised by the family of American Pakistan family and her way of dealing with the conflict and coexistence between various generations by showcasing troubles regarding religions and various more subject matters through genre of black comedy.
After premiering the play for the first time at the Lincoln Center in United States in 2014, the play was performed in Berlin, Hamburg and more throughout the Europe receiving a lot of positive feedbacks.
The writer Ayad Akhtar is known to use the subject matter of how the Pakistani immigrants live within the United States. The writer was awarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 2013 with his play “Disgraced” and is well known to South Korean audience for his thriller play “The Invisible Hand.”
The female protagonist Zarina, who goes up against the traditional way of living where women are restricted of various actions, will be acted out by the South Korean actress Cho Eun-won, and for the father figure of the protagonist Zarina, Afzal will be acted by Jeong Yeon-jong.
