SEOUL, June 14 (Yonhap) -- Incheon Housing and City Development Corporation (iH) announced on the 13th that it would officially open "Ieum 1977" in the open port of Jung-gu, on the 14th as it has been renovated into an open space that anyone can use.

Ieum 1977 is a house built in 1977 designed by Kim Swoo-geun, one of the first generation architects of modern architecture in Korea. It boasts its splendid architecture, including the rough textured corrugated bricks, oriental arch structures, and various types of windows that maximize natural light.

iH purchased this house from a private owner in 2020 and has been promoting it as the No. 1 project to regenerate modern architectural culture assets.

Ieum 1977 is located in the open port area along with Jayu Park, Korea's first western-style park, Jemulpo Gurakbu, which was used as a social gathering place for foreigners during the Open Port Period, and the former Incheon Mayor's office.

"I hope that Ieum 1977, which returned to the arms of citizens, will be established as a cultural advance base for the creation of a cultural ecosystem in the open port area," Lee Seung-woo, president of iH, said. "iH will continue to preserve Incheon's modern architectural and cultural assets, which may disappear in the future, and make it a regional cultural hub."
