SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- From zoned out eyes, loosely tied hair, weak steps with dropped shoulders, South Korean singer and actor Suzy has returned to the screen with a completely different style.

Suzy showed her love for the solo lead character she plays on a new drama series ANNA which is provided through the South Korean ott service Coupang play by saying “I desperately wanted to play this character.”

Suzy acts out Yoo-mi who is filled with potentials but suffers from constant failure that ends up creating a fake persona throughout the series “ANNA”.

Despite Yoo-mi’s potential in ballet, as a kid she had to let it go due to poverty and during high school after getting stabbed in the back by her lover and her art teacher she had to let go of art which she was really good at and transfer to Seoul.

“I want people who watch the series to feel the pitiful situation Yoo-mi faces throughout her life.” adding “I did my best to show how one woman’s life could become this tragic.” said the actress Suzy.

Moreover Suzy added by saying “As a kid I am pretty sure Yoo-mi was praised for her talents. But as an adult she became vulnerable as soon as she started to believe that she was worthless.”

Yoo-mi failed numerous times at getting in to the University she wanted hopped around different part time jobs, then she lands a job at an art gallery where she meets Hyun-joo(Jung Eun-chae) a wealthy director of gallery who give Yoo-mi a sense of deprivation. Therefore, Yoo-mi runs away with Hyun-joo’s passport, University degrees, and more to start her new life as Anna.

While acting Yoo-mi, Suzy focused on the perspective of how she ended up to be someone like this.

“This drama isn’t about how bad of a character Yoo-mi is” adding “Instead of putting the focus on the aspect of lying is bad, I focused on to the ultimate question of how did she end up in a life like that.” Ssaid Suzy.

As of why Yoo-mi ended up lying “I think she started lying to people because she lacked in self loving. Adding “if I have a chance to meet Yoo-mi I would like to tell her that regardless of the fancy clothes, or University degree you are a precious human being.”

Viewers are complementing on Suzy’s acting after watching the first and second episode of Anna because of how accurately she portrayed the complex emotion of constant liar with anxiety deeply embedded underneath her calmness.

As of the complements she received Suzy replied with a gentle chuckle “since I haven’t been complemented often hearing those complements feel bit odd.” Adding “I feel like when the viewers review my work to be interesting and fun to watch I feel like I am being rewarded for all the choices and hard work are paying off.”

The drama starts off with Yoo-mi’s teenage years and gradually show her grow up to be in her 20s and 30s, therefore, Suzy focused on acting more naturally when lying as Yoo-mi got older.

“Instead of switching up the acting style based on her numerical age, she portrayed gradual changes in how Yoo-mi reacts after lying to someone. At first Yoo-mi was nervous that she will get caught, but after quite a while her thought process changed from being nervous to oh she believes it, to lying makes everything so easy.” described Suzy about the character Yoo-mi.

Moreover, Suzy added “I thought in order for people to feel empathy to Yoo-mi, her emotions are suppose to feel as realistic as possible.” adding “I tried to act out the frustration and irritating feeling I get after leaving the scene, instead of a one dimensional rage.”

Suzy shared some of the episodes which happened on the set of the series Suzy, one of them had to do with a scene where she had to perform a sign language to speak to her mother. Unfortunately she couldn’t help but to grove to the rhythm while doing sign language so it was hard for her to stop her hands from moving as if she was dancing. Another episode she shared is about is her effort to look as tired as possible on a scene. In order to look tired and exhausted, Suzy pulled an all nighter and when to the set to shoot.

Suzy analyzed that “Anna” is different from all the dramas about a Ripley Syndrome despite the fact that it is about a character who lives a made up life.

Along with the analysis Suzy added “If she was dealing with Ripley syndrome, Yoo-mi wouldn’t recognize herself and believe to be Anna. Unlike other dramas dealing with the subject matter of Ripley Syndrome through Anna you will feel the anxiety Anna feels due to a constant threat of getting caught with her lies.”

One of the attentions grabbing fact about “Anna” is that people can whiteness Suzy without her liveliness and youthful self. Early in the drama Suzy leads the drama with dark, emotionless face.

As of the question “Did you want to part ways with the image of ‘first love’ you earned from the movie ‘Architecture 101.’” Suzy answered by saying “I don’t necessarily want to part ways with the image, instead I would like to continue on with the image but also show different sides of me as well.”

Out of 6 episodes in total only 4 of them are remaining, those 4 remaining episode will portray the anxiety and emotional wreckage she goes through because she is nervous that she will get caught with her lies.

Suzy mentioned “Towards the end of the episode 2 Yoo-mi encounters Hyun-joo which sparks massive anxiety on Yoo-mi.” adding “throughout the series there come a point where Yoo-mi loses all meaning in lying and her fake persona she created. This is another point to look forward to in the series,”
