Ethnomusicologist's K-popping: Popular Music, Fandom, and Identities, Written by Kim Jeong-won.

SEOUL, Nov. 24 (Yonhap) —An ethnomusicologist who is interested in K-pop, fandom, and the music culture of Korea has spotlighted the different phenomena K-pop has been making from a larger perspective.

The writer groups everything, such as composing a song, singing, illustrating an album cover, making a banner to root for their artists, purchasing an album, picking up litter, and recycling it, as all "doing K-pop."

In addition to talking about the bright side of K-pop, the author also discusses the need for self-reflection in some fandoms that try to cover celebrity problems and crimes uncritically.

The author, who majored in violin and musicology in the undergraduate department and minored in dance theory, received a master's degree from Seoul National University with a major in women's studies. After that, she moved to the United States and received her master's and doctorate degrees as an ethnomusicologist major.

After publishing a doctoral thesis on K-pop's Korean female fandom, she is currently lecturing foreign students on Korean pop culture and K-pop subjects at Yonsei University.
