SEOUL, Mar. 28 (Yonhap) -- Apple TV+ Korean original series “Pachinko,” a story about a Korean family moving to Japan over four generations, is receiving great praises globally.

The show, which was released on March 25, is receiving great attention globally even though the series is set in the era of Korean history.

On the US critic site Rotten Tomato, the show boasted a perfect score in its average tomatometer, which is based on the opinions of hundreds of film and television critics, and recorded a 92% in the popcorn bucket, which is the audience score.

According to reviews by leading media critics, Rolling Stone said, “An adaptation of the bestselling novel about a Korean woman's journey through decades of culture clashes is stunning from start to finish,” and Forbes praised it as "a gem that was not easily seen among a series containing a woman's strong spirit."

The show also recorded 8.5 out of 10 in IMDb, a different US critic site.

589 people participated in the rating and 55.2%, more than half, gave the perfect score. This implies that more people strongly liked the show even among the viewers who positively evaluated the work.

In contrast, the average score of the Korean hit series "Squid Game," was 8.1, and only 19.3% of the critics gave perfect scores. Instead, critics who gave high scores with 8 to 9 points were evenly distributed.

Viewers who gave perfect scores to "Pachinko" said, "I'm fascinated by the movie-like atmosphere," "It is different from most Korean dramas,” “I was worried since I liked the original novel, but the series was amazing.”

"Even if the character doesn't look like me or speaks the same language, it felt very realistic and I was able to relate to it,” said a viewer. This shows how historical K-dramas have plenty of possibilities in the global market.

Pachinko, known to have cost 100 billion won, is one of the most anticipated works on Apple TV+.

The show is based on the novel of the same title written by Korean-American Min-jin Lee, which became a trending topic after the former U.S. president Barack Obama’s recommendation. The series also drew attention for casting the Academy winner Youn Yuh-jung and Korean star Lee Min-ho.

Apple TV+ actively promoted the movie by holding a press preview in the U.S. before its release and revealed the first episode for free on YouTube until April 1.

After the show went viral, the first episode of “Pachinko” surpassed 5.4 million views on March 27 at 10 p.m., which was only two days after its release.
