SEOUL, April 15 (Yonhap) -- Rookie girl group UNIS on Monday said they aim to showcase their distinct charm in the highly competitive K-pop industry through their new mini album "SWICY," which blends sweet and spicy elements much like Korean food.

At a media showcase held in Seoul’s Gwangjin District, member Im Seo-won described the group’s musical identity as “sweet and spicy like tteokbokki,” a popular Korean street food. “Our lyrics reflect Gen Z’s candid language—sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy,” she said.

The title “SWICY,” a coined term combining “sweet” and “spicy,” reflects the album’s overall concept of balancing youthful innocence with bold confidence. According to the group, this duality mirrors their personalities—sweet off stage, but spicy and powerful in performance.

Member Jellydanka shared a behind-the-scenes anecdote about the music video: “There’s a line in the lyrics about ‘gochujang cookies.’ I actually tried one for the first time during the shoot, and it was surprisingly delicious.”

Japanese member Nana picked tteokbokki as her favorite Korean food. “Usually it’s too spicy for me, but when we made it together as members, it turned out sweet. That’s what I’d call ‘SWICY,’” she said.

The five-track album includes the title song “SWICY,” a bright, rhythmic track with playful food metaphors. Other tracks are:

“From a Seed Called ‘What Are You Doing?’”, a lighthearted song about first love; “Ddaeng!”, featuring dynamic vocals and band sounds; “Good Feeling,” a mid-tempo dance track highlighting group harmony; and “Spring Rain,” a sentimental ballad.

UNIS was formed through SBS TV’s survival audition program Universe Ticket, which aired from November 2023 to January 2024. The multinational group consists of eight members: Jin Hyeon-ju, Nana, Jellydanka, Kotoko, Bang Yun-ha, Elisia, Oh Yoon-a, and Im Seo-won. The group debuted in March with their first mini album WE UNIS.

Reflecting on their first year, Nana said, “It’s hard to believe a year has passed since our debut stage. I’m thankful we’ve had the chance to stay busy and travel between Korea and abroad.”

Jin Hyeon-ju added, “Last year, we were honored to receive a lot of love and even end-of-year awards. This year, we want to work even harder and grow into a group that earns more recognition.”

UNIS is also preparing for an Asia tour in the first half of the year, with stops expected in countries such as Japan and the Philippines.

“We’re thrilled to go beyond Korea and meet fans throughout Asia,” Elisia said. “It makes us happy to know that more people will experience our music and energy in person.”
