SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Yonhap) – A family of mountain goats have been spotted foraging for food on the Samcheok beach in Gangwon Province, despite the subfreezing temperature and heavy snowfalls.

An unmanned camera caught a flock of goats, which appeared to be a family, foraging for food in Samcheok, according to the Wonju Regional Environmental Office of the Ministry of Environment on Thursday. Samcheok is one of the major habitats of mountain goats in Korea along with Uljin in North Gyeongsang Province.

The Ministry of Environment has been providing food for mountain goats in designated feed buckets since 2006; as bitter cold waves were expected to hit the Province this winter, 3 more buckets were added to the existing five, making a total of 8 designated spots furnished with food supplies. Unmanned cameras were installed in the spots to observe the flocks.

5 mountain goats were eventually observed to be feeding on the winter food supplies; among the five, there were 3 goats, which appeared to be family members, also observed to be fighting while feeding on the hay in a flock.

Mountain goats, which usually dwell in mountainous regions, are designated and protected as natural monuments and endangered wildlife in South Korea.
