SEOUL, Nov. 13 (Yonhap) -- In MBC's new series "Doubt," one of the standout moments is a scene showing the mysterious daughter, Jang Ha-bin (played by Chae Won-bin), walking down a dimly lit alley.

As she approaches her home, her shadow splits into two, symbolizing her hidden self, unrevealed even to her family. Through intricate directing techniques involving lighting, shadows, and mirrors, Doubt has earned acclaim for creating a cinematic experience on the small screen.

Director Song Yeon-hwa, who meticulously crafted each scene, shared in an interview on the 11th in Mapo, Seoul, “I focused on the harmony between the camera and the actors to perfect each scene."

The level of dedication she brought to the project even led veteran actor Han Suk-kyu to jokingly say at the drama's press conference, "I thought I might die working with Director Song!"

Director Song explained, “Dramas should be engaging in terms of story, but I also wanted to add an element of mystery for viewers to interpret and reflect upon. I aimed to create visually beautiful scenes that leave a lasting impression.” She added, “TV dramas are inherently more straightforward than films, yet I had a quiet hope that viewers would pick up on these details.”

Doubt, which airs its final episode on the upcoming Friday, portrays the unraveling of Korea’s top profiler as he discovers the dark secrets surrounding his daughter’s involvement in a murder case he’s investigating.

The script, penned by newcomer Han Ah-young, was selected through MBC’s screenwriting competition and went through a six-month collaborative revision process with Director Song to bring it to its final form.

Director Song reflected on the journey, noting, “The original script was quite different from the final version, apart from the father-daughter relationship between Jang Tae-soo (Han Suk-kyu) and Ha-bin. Writer Han worked with a development team for a year and a half, and when I took on the direction, the story evolved once more.”

She expressed gratitude for the extended time given to refine the work, saying, “It’s rare to have such a lengthy development period for a script, but thanks to the company’s support, we had the time to truly mature the piece.”
