SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) -- Director Bong Joon-ho's much-anticipated new film Mickey 17 has once again postponed its release date.
According to U.S. entertainment outlet Variety on the 6th, Warner Bros., the distributor of Mickey 17, has shifted the North American release from January 31 to April 18, 2024.
Originally, Mickey 17 was scheduled to premiere in South Korea on January 28, a few days before the North American release. However, with the North American date now moved three months later, the South Korean release is also expected to be delayed, potentially until at least April.
The film's initial release was originally set for March 29 of this year, but the date was pushed to January 2024 due to the Hollywood strikes. Warner Bros. reportedly decided to further delay Mickey 17 to April, coinciding with the Easter holiday season, a peak period for U.S. cinemas.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. quickly claimed the April 18 release date after distributor Lionsgate postponed the release of Michael, a Michael Jackson biopic initially set for that day. This move allows Mickey 17 to avoid competing with other major releases and capitalize on the lucrative spring season.
In a statement, Warner Bros. expressed satisfaction with the new date, noting that April 18 aligns well with the studio's goals.
Mickey 17, Bong Joon-ho's follow-up to his Oscar-winning film Parasite (2019), is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7. The story follows a cloned worker dispatched to a frozen alien planet for colonization efforts.
Hollywood star Robert Pattinson and Korean-American actor Steven Yeun, who won Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for his role in the Netflix series Beef (2022), lead the cast.
