SEOUL, Sep. 7 (Yonhap) -- 8 pieces of artworks from the Goryeo Dynasty, possessed by the Royal Museums of Art and History in Belgium, has finished preservation treatment in South Korea and will be on display for about a month before its return to the museum.

A special exhibition “In Pursuit of the Aesthetic Legacy of Goryeo Dynasty” featuring 6 Goryeo inlaid celadons and 2 pieces of metal crafts, which crossed the borders to Belgium, will take place from Sep. 8 to Oct. 17, according to the National Palace Museum of Korea Tuesday.

The preservation treatment, conducted by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage for 8 months, was a part of the “Overseas Cultural Heritage Conservation and Utilization Support Project” held by the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation in Korea.

The 6 pieces of Goryeo celadons are assumed to have been produced during the end of the Goryeo Dynasty. The various patterns, including riverside site clouds, crane grapevine and children, were carved on the celadons using inlaying technique.

2 pieces of 'celadons inlayed with cloud crane pattern’ (translated) were stripped of the parts fixed in a Japanese style and were put back together with a new adhesive. 'Celadon inlayed with riverside site pattern’ (translated) which was broken into 20 pieces and reattached with plaster was dismantled again before restoring.

'Gourd-shaped celadon inlayed with grape young boy pattern' (translated) had its handle and mouth back into its original form and had the water polo and the lid restored.

The institution gave a touch to 'Celadon jar inlayed with riverside site pattern’’s (translated) discolored parts to match its surrounding tone and ‘Gourd-shaped celadon jar inlayed with riverside stie pattern’ (translated) was stripped of its plasters and had its form and colors back.

The metal crafts, glit-bronze box for acupuncture needles (translated) and bronze jeongbyung (translated), were removed of their corrosives on the surfaces and received conservation and restoration treatments. The former is a long bottle to hold acupuncture needles and the latter, a Buddhism water bottle with a long neck.

The institution removed the black corrosives from the glit-bronze box for acupuncture needles elaborated with lotus flowers and ivy patters. For the bronze bottle, they made and attached a segment for the missing piece on the upper part of the bottle.

5 porcelains of the 8 crafts to be on display were collected by Victor Collin de Plancy, the first French diplomat to be sent to Joseon in 1888 and arrived at the Royal Museums of Art and History in 1946~1947 after passing the hands of another holding institution.

Bronze jeongbyung (translated) was purchased by an expert sent to Korea from the museum in 1969 at an antique shop in Insa-dong with the help of Kim Jae-won, the head of the National Museum of Korea at that time.

A piece of 'celadon inlayed with cloud crane patter’ (translated) and glit-bronze box for acupuncture needles (translated) are known to have been purchased from individual possers.

On the 17th, the National Palace Museum of Korea will reveal VR contents enabling the viewers to enjoy the exhibition online and will release videos explaining the relics and their preservation processes on the museum’s website and YouTube channel.

Meanwhile, the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation will hold online international academic events explaining the historical meaning and values of the Goryeo crafts possessed by the Royal Museums of Art and History and the preservation process until the 8th of October.
