SEOUL April 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean super band BTS has clinched the top spot in Japan's Oricon 5-year cumulative single ranking chart.
According to their agency Big Hit Music on Tuesday, the single "Butter," released in July 2021, secured the top spot in Oricon's cumulative single ranking for sales by work category.
This ranking was calculated based on streaming counts and digital single sales within Japan from May 2019 to January 2024.
BTS' single "Dynamite," released in 2020, grabbed the fourth spot in the same ranking.
Big Hit Music explained, "BTS is the first foreign artist to top the cumulative single ranking in Oricon's era."
Oricon has sporadically released era rankings. In 2019, they announced the Heisei (1989-2019) ranking, which aggregated data from the past 30 years.
In the sales by work category, "Dynamite" ranked third with a playback count of 760 million. "Butter" secured the ninth spot in this category.
In the album ranking, BTS' Japanese album "BTS, The Best" claimed the sixth spot, while Seventeen's first Japanese mini-album "Dream" took the tenth spot.
This achievement marks another milestone for BTS in the Japanese music market, solidifying their position as global music icons.
