SEOUL, March 11th (Yonhap) -- The Crested ibis, one of the endangered bird species also designated as the nation's Natural Monument No.198, has spawned for the first time this year.

The Changnyeong county located in the South Gyeongsang Province announced on the 11th that three pairs of Crested ibises from the Upo Crested Ibis Restoration Center as well as three pairs from the Jangma-myeon Distribution Center have laid six eggs in total.

The height of the egg has been confirmed by the Changnyeong County to be about 7 centimetres.

Crested ibises usually lay one egg at a time in every two days interval for 8 days, spawning a total of four eggs. The possibility for each newborn's survival can be known 28 days after incubation.

However as of right now the survival rate is known to be around 40 percent as 33 out of 100 eggs survived last year.

Starting from 2008, the Changnyeong county has restored the Crested ibises while the Upo Crested Ibises have been spawning the following year.

Han Jeong-woo, the governor of Changnyeong county, said "The news about the Crested ibis spawning is known to bring love and good luck to us so I hope this announcement can help those who are struggling amid the pandemic."
