SEOUL, August 9 (Yonhap) – Actor Oh Young-soo (78), who won the Golden Globe Award as the first Korean for “Squid Game,” will be working with Park Jung-ja in the play “Love Letters.”.
Actor Oh Young-woo, Park Jung-ja, Bae Jong-ok, and Jang Hyeon-sung were casted for “Love Letter,” which will be performed at Ja-yoo small theater in Seoul Arts Center in Oct., Production company Park Company announced on Tuesday.
“Love Letter” is a play about life and love where free spirit Melissa and smart Andy exchange letters from childhood to old ages. Playwright A. R. Gurney’s hit play, “Love Letter” is a steady seller performed globally, translated in 30 languages since it was first performed in New York in 1988.
Enthusiastic, active, and free spirit artist “Melissa” will be played by Park Jung-ja (80), actress who represents S.Korean play.
Park Jung-ja, who is currently playing a supporting role for “Hamlet” at Haeoreum Grand Theater, said she still “thinks about writing ‘love letter’ and who to send it to.” She also said she is excited to write and deliver love letters through this play.
Bae Jong-ok was double casted for the role “Melissa.” She is returning to the stage a year after “Dressing room.”
Oh Young-soo plays “Andy,” elite who is a long lover and a friend with Melissa, with Jang Hyun-sung. Started acting life through play, Oh Young-soo received Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor at the time he was playing a role of Freud for the play “Last Session” in Daehak-ro from last Jan. to March.
The production company announced that Oh Young-soo, coming back to the stage after seven months, said, “I think it’s meaningful to be able to show beautiful pieces in a beautiful season.”
This play will be performed by two couples: Park Jung-ja and Oh Young-soo, and Bae Jong-ok and Jang Hyung-sung. Pak Jung-ja and Oh Young-Soo met at the Ja-yoo theater company in 1971 and have maintained a close friendship as fellow actors on and off stage for over 50 years.
Oh Kyung-taek directed “Love Letter,” which will be performed at the Seoul Arts Center from October 6 to November 13.
He said, "The chemistry between the two actors is most important for this play. When casting two couples of different ages, we considered the acting synergy between actors, who can understand each other well over a long period of time."
The play “Love Letter” will also be performed by Ha Hee-ra and Im ho.
The theater company, Soo Company will perform “Love Letter” in Daehangno JNT Art Hall 1 for a month from Sep. 23. Ha Hee-ra, who plays Melissa, will be performing on the stage for the first time in 14 years since the musical “Goodbye Girl” in 2008.
