SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Yonhap) -- Actor Park Sung-woong will return as a shaman who conducts a ritual to the hip-hop beat.
The actor said, "I practiced exorcism battle scene for three months and filmed it for three days," during a press conference for a movie "Daemuga" at Lotte Cinema in Konkuk University on Friday. He also said, "I thought I would be possessed by a spirit. I thought god could really enter my body when I was exhausted."
"Daemuga" is a story of three shamans in their 20s to 40s representing each generation.
Park Sung-woong played Ma sung-joon who once made a name for himself, but later become a shaman who lives on alcohol instead of God after released from prison. Yang Hyun-min takes the role as the best student in sharman academy, who used to work at night and conquered the field of mechanics. and Ryu Kyung-soo as a shaman who came to shaman academy for short-term class.
Seo Ji-yoo played Jung Yoon-hee, who mainly worked for plays and musical, request exorcism to call the spirit of her dead father. Jung Kyung-ho joined as the boss who tries to make money by taking advantage of sharmans.
The movie draws attention with its unique setting that shamans conduct exorcisms as if they were rapping to the hip-hop beat. Rappers Nucksal, Tiger JK, and MC Meta participated in the music. Director Lee Han-jong explained that he worked hard for the 25-minute battle scene.
"The original score is 53 songs. It's beyond most musical movies. Three hip-hop artists wrote lyrics representing each generation, sharing feedback."
The shamanic world is depicted as a blue ocean in a severe job shortage, while fortune-telling is displayed as a startup. Director Lee said, "There are more social problems included in the movie but I can't tell you because it's a spoiler," adding, "I thought it would be a stylish movie if shamans in their 20s and 40s with their own stories get involved and villain join in the exorcism."
Director Lee, who is interested in the supernatural phenomenon, casted Ma Sung-joon and Lee Sang-soo adiitionally from the original short story of the same name. He said, "Everyone opposed making it into a full-lengt, sho It is a challenge," adding, "I'm confident that it will be a movie that gives the audience a catharsis, blowing away their resentment with excitement."
Park Sung-woong said, "After encountering the short story first, the question of 'Can I do it' immediately became a challenge," adding, "I don't think my mother will like it because she is a church member."
The movie will be released on Oct. 12.
