SEOUL, Apr. 27 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul Metropolitan Government will open a special pop-up zone, titled “Sweet Seoul,” at Gwanghwamun Square, which will serve as a venue for local and foreign tourists to taste diverse Korean food, from Sunday to May 7.
As an event linked to the ongoing Seoul Festa 2023, the pop-up zone will be providing tourists an opportunity to taste the city’s desserts amid the ever-growing interest in Korean food. Korean food, abbreviated as K-food, has recently been garnering worldwide attention with the global popularity of South Korean popular culture, including Korean films and dramas, as well as K-pop.
Nine stores, including five from last year’s Taste of Seoul 100’s cafe and dessert category, will be participating in the event. There will be 6 hands-on booths, where visitors can taste a sample and purchase diverse dessert menus, opened from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. (KST). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs will also be opening two additional booths to help promote scrumptious and exquisite Korean food.
In the meantime, the Makgeolli Self-help Fund (Korea Makgeolli Association and Korea Tableware Manufacturing Association) and the Korean Food Promotion Agency (Korea Traditional Food Research Institute) will also be participating to showcase and sell traditional Korean sweets, rice cakes, and makgeolli (traditional Korean alcoholic beverage) while providing an opportunity for visitors to make their own makgeolli, which has also been designated as national intangible cultural property.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government will be joining hands with Woori Card to prepare and operate a photo zone for the Seoul Food Zone as well as stamp tours so that visitors can genuinely enjoy the taste of the city.
Kim Young-hwan, director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Tourism and Sports Bureau, said, “We will be helping our city Seoul to show off its charm by showcasing and introducing top-tier desserts and food of the city.”
