SEOUL, September 13 (Yonhap) -- The Great Battle of Myeongryang Festival 2022, which will be opened on September 30, will be the first use of ICT technology to reproduce naval warfare.
According to South Jeolla Province on September 12, the Great Battle of Myeongryang festival will be held for three days until October 2 at Uldolmok in Jindo and Haenam under the theme "Uldolmok Festa, Embrace Myeongnyang Light."
The Battle of Myeongnyang is a naval warfare, when Jeolla-do fishermen and the inferior Joseon naval forces defeated the Japanese naval forces at Uldolmok on September 16, 1597.
The program has been putting a spotlight on reproducing naval warfare at the launch ceremony during the Great Battle of Myeongryang Festival, which started in 2008, and this year the opening ceremony will be starting at night and the naval warfare will be reproduced with media produced through ICT technology.
The opening ceremony will be started with the solo performance of the band LEENALCHI, well known for their song "Tiger is Coming," and will continue with fireworks devices stuck in 300 drones to present the straight line used during the fight at the time and dramatically reproduce the naval warfare in the sky.
The highlight of the festival is the naval warfare, which used to be reproduced by using a fishing boat with the fishermen in the sea. This year, a large 20m x 5m veneered screen will be installed at the main stage of Jindo and reproduce the scene of Uldolmok while the naval warfare is produced by computer graphics (CG).
Yang Jung-Ung, the chief director of the festival said, "It is a global tourism trend to deploy and operate major programs at night, and the Myeongnyang Battle Festival has also followed in line with it." In particular, it is differentiated from previous festivals in that various groups can enjoy it with interest by exhibiting works by global artists, away from the existing festival-style framework.
Korean Asian Modern & Contemporary painter ARTNOM's newly made installation (Myeongnyang installation) will be exhibited. Furthermore, Lee Soon-shin's statue and more things to see which are specialized at night using light and illumination in Panokseon will be provided.
Prior to the opening ceremony, Kim Han-min, the director who produced the movies "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" and "Hansan: Rising Dragon," will be giving a special speech about the topic "Myeongnyang."
South Jeolla Province is expecting the Myeongnyang Battle Festival to contribute greatly to attracting 100 million tourists and 3 million foreign tourists, which is the goal of the 2022–2023 year to visit South Jeolla Province.
Park Yong-hak, the Tourism Division Manager of South Jeolla Province said, "Nothing much has changed throughout the 13 years of the Myeongnyang Battle Festival, but this time big changes are made with programs planned with the use of media," and added, "We will foster it as a global festival that delivers a future-oriented message of peace and harmony."
