CJ Olive Young earns international open-source standard certification

SEOUL, March 9 (Yonhap) -- CJ Olive Young said Monday it has obtained the international open-source standard certification “ISO/IEC 5230:2020,” becoming the first company in South Korea’s beauty and health industry to do so.

ISO/IEC 5230:2020 is the only international standard that evaluates a company’s capability to comply with and manage open-source licenses.

Open source refers to publicly available source code that anyone can freely use. While it helps reduce development costs and time, its transparent nature can expose security vulnerabilities, making compliance with related license regulations essential.

The certification is granted to companies that meet the required standards after a comprehensive evaluation of their open-source compliance capabilities, including policies and processes for open-source software management, the expertise of responsible organizations and personnel, and related education and training.

The certification recognizes that Olive Young’s open-source management system meets international standards for security and transparency as the company seeks to evolve into a “global beauty tech platform.”

With the company set to accelerate its global expansion — including plans to open an offline store in the United States in May — the certification is expected to help strengthen the reliability and stability of Olive Young’s services overseas.

Olive Young established its open-source management system in 2023 to meet the requirements for international standard certification. It designated a dedicated organization and personnel responsible for verifying and managing open-source software and formed an internal consultative body to identify and manage potential risks.

The company has also introduced its own open-source management regulations and a process that mandates open-source verification during system development, while operating systems to review open-source licenses and check security vulnerabilities.

“This certification recognizes Olive Young’s efforts to nurture IT talent and build its own management systems,” a company official said. “As a leading K-beauty platform, we will continue to advance our open-source management framework in line with global standards.”
