SEOUL, July 20 (Yonhap) -- Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do, is full of yellow.

Guwau Village is located below Pijae Hill (also called Samsuryeong) at the entrance to Maebongsan Mountain.

This place, where "its topography resembles the scenery of nine cows peacefully lying around," started to burst one million yellow sunflower buds.

It is the first time in three years since Guwau has been covered with yellow.

This is because the Taebaek Sunflower Festival, which has been held every summer since 2005, was not able to be held properly in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.

However, this year, sunflowers were planted in a field of about 66,000 square meters, which is larger than the area of nine soccer fields.

The flower buds are clearer than ever.

At this rate, the Guwau sunflowers are expected to reach their peak on the last weekend of July.

This year, the Taebaek Sunflower Festival will be held from July 22 till August 7.

The main events include a trip into one million sunflowers, a walk in the stone wall garden, a busking performance, an environmental sculpture exhibition for a public art project, and feeding goats.

Cafes, and guesthouses will also be operated.

"This is already the 18th time," Hwang Chang-ryeol, president of the Sunflower Culture Foundation, said on Monday. "Although there were a lot of hard times, I feel rewarded whenever someone tells me, they're reminded of sunflowers in the summer city, Taebaek during hard times."
