SEOUL, Mar. 7 (Yonhap) -- "The Finals," a first-person shooter (FPS) game developed by Nexon's European subsidiary "Embark Studios," has been unveiled along with a global beta test on Tuesday.
"The Finals," in which four teams of three compete for the first place, chose a different syntax in many ways from the previous death match-oriented team battle shooting game serviced by Nexon.
First of all, what stands out is the game method that induces strategic play.
Each team must acquire randomly generated "safe" throughout the map, carry them to a cash-out machine in the form of an ATM before other teams, and then protect the machine until the settlement is completed.
If the settlement is completed safely, the amount in the safe will be accumulated as a team score, but if the cash-out machine is taken along the way, the score will be donated to another team.
Therefore, as the name suggests, "The Finals" plays an unpredictable game until the last minute of the time limit.
It was rare for the team that got the safe to finish the settlement safely, and in some cases, the last-place team successfully intercepted the safe with high scores and quickly hit the top spot.
Adding variety to this is the unique level design of “The Finals,” which is implemented with the latest graphics.
There are several buildings on the map, and each building is divided into floors and connected like a spider web with stairs, scaffolding, and zip lines. In addition, even on the same map, the weather and time zone vary from plate to plate, giving a fresh feeling.
It is a complexity that is different from the existing Team competition FPS, which had only a two-story building at most.
In addition, most of the visible walls and floors can be destroyed with bombs, rockets, and hammers that each character has.
This system induces creative play methods, such as breaking the floor from the upper floor and entering the lower floor, or hitting the enemy who is wary of the front in a corner.
The realistic destructive effect of "The Finals" has also been shown in the “Battlefield” series of large-scale war FPS games produced by Electronic Arts (EA) in the past by key developers at Embark Studios.
However, once the character and equipment were decided, there was no way to change it until the end of the game.
It seems to be intended to strengthen strategy, but it seemed likely to be a barrier to entry for beginners who had to learn the game by making various attempts.
The Finals' BM (benefit model) is a costume sales and battle pass.
Due to the nature of competition-oriented FPS, which is difficult to release items that affect balance, the production team worked hard on customization functions so that players can reveal their individuality.
Clothes can be changed by various parts regardless of the character's body type and gender, and various types of bundle packages are available from the launch stage. There are also gun skins and decorative attachments that can be found in "Valorant," which stimulate the desire to collect.
Embark Studios is also developing a cooperative-based third-person shooting game called "ARC Raiders."
Nexon has announced that it aims to release "ARC Raiders" by the end of this year, including "The Finals," which will start beta testing on the same day.
