SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- K-pop diva IU has been recognized as Billboard's "Number One Korean Artist," according to her agency EDAM Entertainment on Wednesday.
The accolade comes as part of Billboard's Global No. 1 Artist Series, which highlights leading artists from various countries. Billboard praised IU as "irreplaceable," stating, "There are many idols, skilled musicians, talented actors, and adept show hosts, but IU is the only one excelling in all these fields simultaneously."
Billboard emphasized IU’s immense popularity among K-pop fans and Korean music enthusiasts, noting her cross-generational appeal. "Her musical achievements and performances make her standing even more evident," the publication added.
The outlet highlighted IU's achievements this year, including her hit single "Love Wins All," which topped Melon's Top 100 chart within an hour of release, held the weekly chart's No. 1 spot for four consecutive weeks, and secured the No. 1 position on February’s monthly chart. IU also captivated 500,000 fans during her world tour.
Furthermore, Billboard acknowledged IU's groundbreaking accomplishments, such as becoming the first female artist to perform at Seoul World Cup Stadium and the first woman to stage concerts at all major stadiums in Korea, earning her a unique distinction in the industry.
IU expressed her gratitude, saying, "Global, Billboard, Number One—these words feel unfamiliar yet bring immense joy and honor."
IU is set to expand her career further next year, with the upcoming Netflix series You Have Done Well and the MBC drama 21st Century Crown Princess (working title), as well as ongoing music projects and other activities.
