SEOUL, March 6 (Yonhap) -- Musician Yaeji, known for her work in Seoul and New York, released her latest single Pondeggi on March 5, according to her label XL Recordings on Thursday.
Pondeggi is characterized by a repetitive beat reminiscent of a hand-clapping game. Through storytelling, Yaeji explores the relationship between humans, nature, and technology in this track.
The music video, directed by filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang, features singer and actress Uhm Jung-hwa.
In the video, Yaeji appears as a silkworm engaging in a "pondeggi game" (hand-clapping game) to restore a disrupted metamorphosis process. The act of clapping symbolizes human connection. Uhm Jung-hwa plays a techno-witch who interferes with the transformation, adding dramatic tension.
Born in 1993 in Flushing, Queens, Yaeji grew up in Seoul, Tokyo, Atlanta, and New York, blending Korean rock, electronic music, late-'90s and early-2000s hip-hop and R&B, and experimental bass and techno to create her signature hybrid sound.
Her 2023 album With A Hammer, an introspective work, received critical acclaim from The Guardian, Pitchfork, New York Magazine, NME, and other prominent publications.
