CANNES, France, May 25 (Yonhap) -- "After the first screening last night, I told director Park Chan-wook that he was 'the one who made some part of my life complete.' I guess I could summarize my impression of working with director Park in that one sentence."
Chinese actor Tang Wei, who starred in "Decision to Leave," which entered the competition section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, expressed her feelings about working with director Park Chan-wook.
"I love director Park Chan-wook so much," she said at a press conference held in Cannes, France on the 24th (local time). "He does a great job in every way, and even gave me a (special) character like Seorae."
"If it wasn't for director Park, Seorae wouldn't have been possible," she said, at the press conference with the local reporters. "(Looking at director Park) I thought he was a living thing from another planet."
"Decision to Leave" tells the story of a police detective Hae Joon (Park Hae-il) who falls in love with a woman suspected of murdering her husband. Tang Wei played the role of the mysterious Seorae, who is faithful yet hesitant about her desires.
It is said that director Park and writer Jeong Seo-kyeong wanted to work with Tang Wei so much that they wrote the scenario keeping her in mind. Although the scenario was not complete then, they met Tang Wei and told her about the movie to offer her a role.
"When Director Park explained about the movie 'Decision to Leave' while suggesting me a role, he said that I'd need to play a Chinese woman in the story that happens in Korea. That's very interesting because I can put a lot of my experience into it. I hope there would be more chances for different countries to collaborate."
"Director Park allowed me to act as much as I want," she emphasized. "The filming process was better than any other work I've done so far."
However, with most of the lines being Korean, she also faced difficulties with language barriers. It is said that instead of only memorizing the lines and pronunciation, she studied Korean from grammar, speaking skills and listening skills with her teachers every day until the day filming was over.
"Director Park probably said I was stubborn because he saw me studying Korean. I dig into the meaning of each and every word (laugh). When he saw me have a hard time, he'd usually take a break and just look at me quietly. It's like he made me stubborn."
Park Hae-il also helped by reading the script and recording it to hand it to Tang Wei. Tang wei even called him as a "Korean teacher on set."
Tang Wei is emerging as a strong nominee for this year's Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award. It is said that another representative work has been born after "Lust, Caution."
To this, Tang Wei said, "I'd probably be able to tell that in 10 years. It always takes time for any work to be accepted by the audience."
As much as she showed melodramatic acting, she also defined what love is for her.
"I think love can happen when you meet the right person at the right time and the right place. However, that person should probably be ready to admit that love just like Seorae. I think one can love when their channels are the same."
