SEOUL, July 19 (Yonhap) -- SBS announced on the 19th that Yook Sung-jae, Kim Ji-yeon, and Kim Ji-hoon have been cast as the lead actors in the upcoming drama 'Gwigung,' set to air next year. The official English title for the series is not yet officialized.
'Gwigung,' meaning haunted palace, is a fantasy romance drama that tells the story of Yeori, a shaman who rejects her destined role as a medium, and Yoon Gap, a scribe possessed by an imugi (a mythical Korean serpent).
Kim Ji-yeon will play Yeori, a shaman with exceptional spiritual abilities. Yeori enters the ghost-infested palace after her first love, Yoon Gap, is possessed by an imugi.
Yook Sung-jae transforms into Yoon Gap, a principled scholar whose body is taken over by the imugi. Following the possession, Yoon Gap becomes the subject of rumors claiming he has lost his mind.
Kim Ji-hoon takes on the role of King Lee Seong, a reformist monarch who dreams of a stronger Joseon and battles vengeful ghosts within the royal family. Lee Seong, along with his loyal subject Yoon Gap and the shaman Yeori, unravels the secrets of the palace-threatening ghost, 'Palcheokgwi.'
The drama is directed by Yoon Sung-sik, known for 'Bridal Mask' (2012), 'You're the Best, Lee Soon-shin' (2013), and 'Mr. Queen' (2020), with a screenplay by Yoon Soo-jung, who wrote 'The King's Face' (2014) and 'Sassy Go Go' (2015).
