SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- Marvel Studio’s very first work of this year, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Ant-Man 3),” which also marks the third film in Marvel’s Ant-Man trilogy, will be meeting its first opening weekend crowd.
Paul Rudd’s “Ant-Man 3,” which had its world premiere on Wednesday, has already gathered 272,000 people over two days, according to data released by the Korea Film Council Thursday.
The film, also dubbed the entry to Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, follows the story of Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, who is transported to the Quantumania and fights against Kang the Conqueror.
Meanwhile, the Japanese sports animated film “The First Slam Dunk,” which finally hit 3 million admissions in South Korea as of Wednesday, is also expected to gather more moviegoers over the weekend. The sports anime, which hit the local theaters right after the New Year Holidays on Jan. 4, accumulated 325,000 admissions last weekend, which marked the sixth week of its release (Feb. 10 - 12).
As of the morning of Thursday, the ticket reservation rates for “Ant-Man 3” and “The First Slam Dunk” were 44.1% and 23.1%, respectively.
In the meantime, the remastered version of one of James Cameron’s mammoth hits, “Titanic,” touched down in third place, followed by the animated comedy “The Amazing Maurice,” which tells the story of the tale of a large talking cat Maurice sitting in fourth place. James Cameron’s second venture to the Avatar franchise, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which recently surpassed 10 million admissions, ranked fifth, gathering its last-minute audiences.
However, the fact that it is difficult to find Korean films topping the box office chart is rather disappointing. The only Korean-based film that secured its spot on the chart was Director Yoo Je-kyun’s home-grown musical film “Hero,” which premiered last December.
