SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) -- A memorial hall will be built in honor of South Korean legendary actor Shin Seong-il -- a South Korean actor, film director, producer, and former politician who were long active in the domestic film industry -- in Yeongcheon, a city in North Gyeongsang Province, announced Monday.
10 billion won will be invested by the end of 2024 to build a 9,946-square-meters-wide building, which will be named “Shin Seong-il Memorial Hall,” near the late Shin Seong-il’s hanok (a traditional Korean house) in Yeongcheon.
The memorial hall will have two floors above the ground and a total floor area of 1,371 square meters, along with a film room, film planning room, permanent exhibition room, movie cafe, and a film storage.
After moving into a hanok in Yeongcheon in May 2008, the Actor died on Nov. 4, 2018, at the age of 81. The Actor enjoyed the longest era as a mega-hit star in South Korean film history, appearing in 514 films for more than 50 years since his debut with “Romance Papa" in 1960.
He also entered politics based on his success in the film industry; despite his defeat in the 1981 and 1996 parliamentary elections, he was eventually elected as a member of the National Assembly in the 16th general elections in 2000.
