GANGNEUNG, South Korea, April 30 (Yonhap) -- The municipality of Gangneung said Thursday it has begun full-scale preparations to open its beaches this summer, aiming to offer safer and more distinctive themed and healing spaces for visitors.

Gyeongpo Beach in Gangwon Province will be open for 51 days from July 4 to Aug. 23, while other beaches in the city will operate for 45 days from July 10 to Aug. 23.

The city said it will focus on creating beaches that are “safer and more inviting,” strengthening emergency response systems and expanding facilities and content for families.

Ahead of the opening, authorities plan to complete a comprehensive set of water play facilities. A 150-meter floating bridge will be installed near Oryeok Rock, featuring themed colors to create a unique marine experience space.

To promote the area as a diving attraction, the city will install a symbolic structure at the entrance and introduce participatory events such as balance games, jegichagi and pose diving.

On the beach, large water slides, three modular seawater pools, a children’s play zone and a sand playground will be set up. The main pool will include an adventure zone, while the children’s pool will feature interactive activities such as fishing-themed play equipment.

A shaded sand playground will also be newly introduced to enhance convenience for family visitors.

To strengthen safety, the city has purchased 21 automated external defibrillators and is conducting risk assessments and radiation inspections at beaches starting in March.

An official from the city said Gangneung will thoroughly review all preparations to ensure visitors can enjoy a safe and comfortable beach experience.
