'KPop Demon Hunters' OST debuts at No. 8 on Billboard 200 amid global popularity

SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- The original soundtrack (OST) for Netflix’s U.S. animated film "KPop Demon Hunters", which centers on the K-pop phenomenon, is gaining global traction alongside the movie’s growing popularity.

 

According to Billboard on Sunday (local time), the OST album for "KPop Demon Hunters" debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, the main U.S. album chart. The album earned 31,000 equivalent album units in its opening week.

 

The Billboard 200 ranks albums based on a combination of traditional album sales, streaming equivalent albums (SEA), and track equivalent albums (TEA). For the week, the soundtrack recorded 27,000 SEA units, 3,000 in physical sales, and 1,000 TEA units.

 

This marks the highest debut for a soundtrack album this year and its first appearance in the top 10 of the chart.

The OST features tracks performed by the fictional K-pop girl group "Huntrix" from the film, including "Take Down" and "Golden", as well as "Soda Pop" by their rival boy group "Saja Boys". A special version of "Take Down" performed by TWICE members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung is also included.

 

The film's popularity extends beyond Billboard, with the OST making waves on Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform.

 

On Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart dated June 28, several tracks from the soundtrack appeared prominently: "Golden" ranked No. 7, followed by "Your Idol" at No. 11, "Soda Pop" at No. 17, "How It's Done" at No. 19, "Free" at No. 34, "What It Sounds Like" at No. 39, "Take Down" at No. 57, and the Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung version of "Take Down" at No. 100.

 

On the Daily Top Songs USA chart, "Your Idol" came in at No. 6, followed by "Golden" at No. 8, "How It's Done" at No. 21, "Soda Pop" at No. 29, "What It Sounds Like" at No. 38, "Free" at No. 42, and "Take Down" at No. 52.
